Reflecting on 2022

YEAR IN REVIEW

2022 was a year of growth at Learning Collider. Our core team doubled. Our network of research affiliates expanded. We embarked on new projects and partnerships, tapping into burgeoning tech platforms with robust data.

Following our lab’s compass, social impact at scale, we continue seeking and testing tech-powered, high-impact innovations that accelerate equity, upward mobility, and social outcomes where we live, learn, and work. We're pleased to share some highlights from 2022.

OUT OF THE IVORY TOWER

Our lab and affiliates often see valuable findings gated in the proverbial ivory tower – a common occurrence in academia. In 2022, we worked from many angles to share our methods, findings, data analyses, and more.

• Peter Bergman and affiliate Peter Hull presented new econometric methods for identifying and measuring disparate impact to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, framing the discussion around financial lending decisions pertinent to one of our confidential research partners.

• COO Sara Nadel presented with workforce partner Mainstay to HR professionals on the value-add of research-backed AI technologies in recruiting and retention.

• Learning Collider and a key partner, AffordableHousing.com, presented data analyses bi-monthly to the White House, HUD, and the Treasury.

• Peter Bergman and affiliate Peter Hull both presented at the Housing Discrimination Study Conference hosted by HUD and 2M Research.

• As a Schmidt Futures Innovation Fellow, Peter Bergman presented at Schmidt Futures convenings, connecting with other Fellows and changemakers who share our vision of tech-powered social impact.

• Internally, our research and data science team prepared and delivered presentations to partnering tech platforms, engaging them as stakeholders in the research process and empowering their business processes with real-time data insights.

Augmenting these presentations, we released our first white paper on machine-learning algorithms used in hiring, launched a collection of research summaries (two linked below) for lay audiences, and published blog posts on projects, findings, and our impact-at-scale philosophy.
